I recently wrote a script that runs as a folder action. I use scripts for things like creating small applications, toggling an ssh proxy (for surreptitious web browsing at work), backing up particular folders to Dropbox on a set schedule, fetching TV show information and adding it to iTunes, running common administrator tasks in Remote Desktop when managing multiple computers, and adding features to Applescript-aware applications. You can assign key-equivalents and it has niceties like providing app-specific menus. It can run Applescripts and any other scripts from a menu bar item. I highly recommend FastScripts for anyone that routinely scripts. I routinely use Applescript both personally and professionally (including integrating it into my own applications and providing support for 3rd-party apps like Twitterrific (I provided the basic dictionary and integration, but they've taken it from there).
